After companies such as the German trio accepted to stretch their sedans, Infiniti decided to do it with its crossover, as an attempt to get a similar sales boost. After some months being exclusive of that market, this version now becomes the global QX50, arriving in North America in a few months. The fact that you can barely notice the extra 3.2” denotes how good the design work was, but they still add 4” for legs and trunk. Nothing else was changed, including the 325-hp 3.7-liter V6 with seven automatic speeds and AWD.

The company performed a sudden change on its naming strategy, which resulted on the entire lineup being sold under new names in a matter of days. As if it wasn’t enough, that event arrived around a year before some of the current cars had to be updated… and those facelifts turned out almost as deep as what most companies reserve to present in new generations. You’re about to meet the latest example of such interesting strategy.

Names such as 1-Series, A-Class or Evoque, to be more specific. Making such excellent companies accessible to more people is a very interesting strategy, but the truth is their best works will always be reserved to the other extreme of the lineup. Infiniti, for instance, has done a great job with Q50 and QX50. But talking about examples like QX80 is simply a whole different world.

Click to see in high resolutionAfter the releasing Citan and creating the upcoming Renault Twingo and smart fortwo from the same project, now it’s time for the Mercedes-Benz/Renault-Nissan partnership generate benefits for Infiniti once again. The new four-cylinder engine appears exclusively in China but it’s already confirmed that it’ll be offered elsewhere. Although there aren’t consumption or performance information yet, it produces 211 cv and 32.5 kgfm. This is Q50’s second German propeller, following a turbo-diesel 2.2L unit of 170 cv and 40.6 kgfm.

BMW and Mercedes-Benz at least stick to numbers no longer according to the car’s engines, but other strategies seem to be understood only by their own creators. A few days ago Infiniti has announced some changes to theirs in order to simplify it, but also showed some very interesting small teasers. So what could be a better way to release that new naming method than with a whole new car using it?
