Click to view in high resolutionIf car segments were members of a big family, coupés would be those who stay in the shadow of their siblings. People who want a charming car often go to cabriolets. Practical buyers prefer sedans. Performance-seekers will only take coupés in sporty variations. And, more recently, coupés can't even get the undecided: their four-door brothers are increasingly eager to snatch those folks. Mercedes-Benz sells at least one of each of those. However, like in most families, coupés only need a moment of your undivided attention to show at what are they good. When someone does that, the results are usually breathtaking.

Clique para ver o motorSempre graças à importadora Strasse, a linha de modelos do fabricante alemão preparados pela Brabus acaba de aumentar mais uma vez. O modelo da vez é o Classe S, cuja versão de performance e exclusividade igualmente altos chega por US$ 640 mil. As alterações típicas aparecem de novo, como o predomínio da cor preta e os retoques visuais de gosto extravagante. Entretanto, também está lá um motor V8 biturbo, que desenvolve 770 cv e 112,2 kgfm – aceleração de 0 a 100 km/h em 3,7 segundos e máxima de 325 km/h. Outros destaques são partes feitas em fibra de carbono e dutos do motor banhados a ouro.

The term is their own creation, and refers to hatchbacks in their sporty versions, with aggressive design and, of course, high-performance powertrain. This trend was focused on compact cars, at first, but it didn’t take long to expand towards more expensive categories. Months ago, Renault and Seat competed over a Nürburgring record, but a new version took the title back to Mégane. Today, Mercedes-Benz updates its hatchback already including the AMG sibling – weeks after the latest Audi RS3 took the old one’s gold medal in engine power.

Their everlasting search for new buyers reached the inevitable point of looking to the less wealthy, after finding so many different ways to keep pleasing the regular crowd. The only way to do it in the short term was making their entry-level lineup cheaper, but it would bring an unbearable loss of prestige. This is why they opted for the whole new investment that led to models like A-Class and 1-Series. As it turns out, these became successful enough to motivate several changes even to the older options.

A versão 200 de CLA, Classe A, Classe B e GLA usa a nova versão do motor 1.6 turbo, mas ele não mudou além do óbvio: foram mantidos potência (156 cv), torque (25,5 kgfm), e plano de manutenção (revisões a cada dez mil quilômetros). Todo o restante também foi mantido, de modo que eles continuam trazendo o sistema start/stop, o seletor de vários modos de condução, e o mesmo restante da lista de equipamentos. A minivan começou a ser vendida em julho, um mês depois dos demais.

That’s why Mercedes only gave it some nips and tucks now, like retouched bumpers and spoilers, and new wheels. More important news is the adoption of a twin-turbo, 4.0 V8 for G 500, good for 422 hp and 62 kgfm, and a diesel-burner 2.1-liter for G 350 d, which reaches 245 hp and 61,1 kgfm. Regarding the AMGs, G 63 goes to 571 hp and G 65 to 630 hp and 101.6 kgfm. There’s also the AMG Edition 463, with two-tone internal trim, Nappa seats, 21” wheels and carbon-fiber inserts.

However, there are times when the same purpose needs a different way to be achieved. Mercedes released the brand new GLE lineup starting with the Coupé, some months ago, and only now moved to the main model. But if you have good memory, you’ll understand what was done just by looking at the pictures.

Clique para ver o interiorLançada no último Salão de Genebra, a mais nova criação da Brabus já pode ser adquirida no Brasil. A extravagância típica da preparadora já aparece por fora, com spoilers e parachoques melhorados com fibra de carbono. Já as rodas de 21” compartilham a cor bronze com os vários detalhes da cabine, que por sua vez vem toda revestida em couro. O motor V8 biturbo do S 63 AMG foi retrabalhado para gerar 850 cv e 147,8 kgfm, suficientes para levá-lo a 100 km/h em 3,5 s, a 200 km/h em 9,4 s, e ao limite eletrônico de 350 km/h. Também vêm tração integral e câmbio automático de sete marchas.

Custando R$ 159.000, a C180 pode vir como sedã ou Touring (perua), e repete o conjunto de mudanças externas vistas no C200 preparado: entre itens de série e opcionais, estão lá spoilers dianteiro, laterais e traseiro, rodas de aro 18” ou 19”, e novos pedaleiras, pinos de porta, tapetes e paddle-shifters de metal, todos com a marca Brabus. O motor é um 1.6 turbo de 177 cv e 30,6 kgfm, que vai de 0 a 100 km/h em 8,4 segundos e à máxima de 230 km/h. Todos os itens novos são fabricados pela OEM Quality.

Os outros destaques incluem carroceria em alumínio, câmbio automático 7G-Tronic com quatro modos de uso, central Comand Online com leitor de DVD e conexão à Internet (sempre que o carro esteja parado), entrada e partida sem chave, operação da tampa traseira por gestos, e uma série de sistemas eletrônicos voltados à segurança.

Even though Mercedes’ last attempt of reviving the Maybach brand was an expressive failure, during the last decade, it was impossible to ignore the fact that wealthier customers are always looking for something new on which to spend their money. The problem, then, was to figure a different way to work, in order not to set itself to the same result. However, after taking a few other variables into account, the best solution couldn’t have become easier to find.

As mudanças incluem exaustão controlada, pacote aerodinâmico, rodas forjadas de 21”, suspensão regulável e os detalhes visuais da Brabus, incluindo motor com capa preta e dutos banhados a ouro (para dissipar melhor o calor). Falando nele, trata-se de um V8 biturbo de 710 cv e 97,8 kgfm, que acelera de 0 a 100 km/h em 4,9 segundos. Unidades com até doze meses de uso também podem ser convertidas.
